Challenge

Nurses and clinicians in Belgian hospitals face time-consuming paperwork, fragmented access to patient information, and the constant risk of medication errors. Existing workflows rely on manual checks that are slow and error-prone, especially in fast-paced wards where staff move between patients continuously.

Digital tools, where they exist, are often poorly integrated with hospital information systems. Staff end up toggling between multiple applications or falling back to paper records. The result is duplicated effort, delayed care decisions, and an administrative burden that pulls clinicians away from patient-facing work.

Zorgi, a leading Belgian healthcare innovator, needed a secure and intuitive mobile app that could integrate with existing hospital systems and bring reliable digital workflows directly to the bedside.

Solution

We built xCare Mobile, a React Native app that gives hospital staff a single entry point for task management, patient information, and medication verification.

Task Management

Nurses view, manage, and complete their daily tasks directly from their mobile devices, replacing paper-based checklists and reducing transcription errors.

Patient List

Clinicians access their patients' vitals, specificities, and care needs from anywhere in the hospital, without returning to a workstation.

Secure Access

The app connects to hospital services through a unified, secured gateway, giving staff access to all relevant services and products directly at the patient's bedside.

Key Features

  • Barcode verification: Ensures every medication or transfusion is administered to the right patient
  • Native device features: Camera and barcode scanning for verification, NFC for secure authentication
  • Secure integration: Seamless connection with hospital information systems, compliant with FHIR and HL7 standards
  • Quality assurance: Robust CI/CD pipelines, code reviews, and monitoring

Results

  • 60% less admin overhead reported by nursing teams after adoption
  • Deployed at 3 hospitals: ZAS (Ziekenhuis aan de Stroom), Maria Middelares, and Grand Hospital de Charleroi
  • Rapid adoption: Nurses and clinicians reported significant improvements in daily workflows
  • Improved patient safety: Barcode verification and streamlined workflows reduced medication errors
  • Information at the bedside: Staff access patient data and complete tasks without returning to a workstation
