Description
We partnered with Zorgi, a leading Belgian healthcare innovator, to create xCare Mobile—a secure and intuitive app that empowers hospital staff to manage tasks, verify medications and transfusions via barcode scanning, and access essential hospital services from any device. Seamlessly integrated with hospital systems and leveraging native device features, xCare Mobile delivers safer, more efficient workflows at the bedside.
Challenge
Nurses and clinicians in hospitals often struggle with time-consuming paperwork, fragmented access to patient and product information, and the risk of medication errors. Existing workflows can be inefficient and prone to mistakes, especially when digital tools are lacking or poorly integrated. Staff need a reliable, user-friendly solution that supports their daily routines, improves patient safety, and adapts to the complex, fast-paced hospital environment.
Solution
As a team, we developed xCare Mobile, focusing on:
Task Management: Nurses can view, manage, and complete their daily tasks directly from their mobile devices, reducing paperwork and minimizing errors.
Patient list: Nurses have access to their patient's vitals, specificities and needs from anywhere.
Secure Access: Connecting to the hospital services allow an unified and secured access to all the services and product directly from the app at the patient's bedside
Key Features
Barcode Verification: Ensures every medication or transfusion is administered to the right patient.
Native Device Features: Camera and native barcode scanning for barcode verification, NFC for a secure authentification
Secure Integration: Seamless connection with hospital information systems and compliance with healthcare data security standards (FIRH, HL7,...).
Quality Assurance: Implemented robust CI/CD pipelines, code reviews, and monitoring to maintain high standards of quality and reliability.
Results
Rapid Adoption: Nurses and clinicians quickly embraced xCare Mobile, reporting significant improvements in their daily work.
Patient Safety: Barcode verification and streamlined workflows have dramatically reduced errors and improved safety.
Efficiency Gains: Staff save time, paperwork is minimized, and information is always at their fingertips.
Positive Feedback: Hospital teams are highly satisfied, noting that the app has transformed their workflows and increased the quality of care.
Lessons Learned
User-Centric Design: Listening to frontline staff is essential for adoption and success.
Security & Integration: Seamless, secure integration with hospital systems is a must for healthcare apps.
Resilience Matters: Offline capability is crucial in hospital environments.
Collaboration: Close cooperation between technical teams and healthcare professionals drives the best results.
xCare Mobile demonstrates how thoughtful digital tools can make healthcare safer, more efficient, and more human—one scan and one patient at a time.
The app is currently in use by a lot of hopitals in Belgium including ZAS (Ziekenhuis aan de Stroom), Maria Middelares or Grand Hospital de Charleroi
